Texture Tutorial #01: How to create metallic texture I

Metallic texture is one of the most useful textures in 3D games.  I will create simple metallic texture using Add Noise filter.

Step 01)  Execute Photoshop program, and then select menu File > New command. Then, New window is shown. Set Size = 512x512, Resolution = 72, Color Mode = RGB, and then click OK button.

Step 02)  Select Fore Color on left Tool Bar.  Set the Fore Color = RGB(128, 128, 128).

Step 03)  Insert new layer using Create New Layer command, and then paint whole texture area with Fore Color using Paint Bucket Tool on the left Tool Bar.

Step 04)  Select menu Filter > Noise > Add Noise filter.

Step 05)  Add Noise window is shown.  Set Amount = 4 and Distribution = Gaussian.

Step 06)  For reference, Distribution = Uniform generates equally distributed noise.

Today, Add Noise filter was used to create a simple metallic game texture. Next tutorial will use two filters to create more interesting metallic texture.

Introduction to 3D Game Texture Design

I think that the best way to make 3D game textures is   1) to take real images and then 2) to use Photoshop program to modify these real images. However in some cases, I create game textures using Photoshop. I also use Photoshop for drawings with Wacom tablet. Any way, Photoshop is very powerful program for me to create or modify game textures.

In this game texture design section, I will demonstrate how to create some useful textures in games using Photoshop.

Saying hello to every one in this blog

To every one in this blog

  How do you do?

This is my first post, and I am happy to meet you here.

I opened this blog because I want to share some useful information about how to make game and animation designs using Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, and game engines.

I have studied 3D game and animation designs several years. I am now a vendor as a game designer on BlackBerry smart phone, and also I am making games using Unreal Engine 2.5, Unreal Engine 3.0, and Source Engine. As you know, these game engines were used to make military shooting games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, and also Counter Strike and Half life series.

From now on, I will build up this blog as much as I can.
I hope that this blog is useful for your studying game and animation designs.

  Sincerely yours,
